Women Without Roofs Nepal

WWR tries to help the women with other issues, including legal assistance with obtaining citizenship. They also work with other organisations to provide training and education on various topics including first aid, handicrafts and health.

The above information has mostly been extracted from Anna Townsend’s book “Come with Me to Kathmandu”.

http://www.wwr-nepal.org/

This is an organisation set up by Anna Townsend to support vulnerable women in Nepal. Anna was previously a member of Hope Church and she continues to be involved in helping to run Women Without Roofs (WWR). Women are particularly at risk of becoming vulnerable in Nepal. Early marriage, gender and caste discrimination together with psychological and physical violence remain common.

WWR helps by contributing towards rent, medical bills and the education of their clients’ children. Women are referred to WWR by pastors and their wives or by women that WWR are already helping. The WWR team then meet with the prospective client in her home to assess her circumstances. They check that she is on her own and doesn’t have any other sources of income that she may not have told her pastor about. If the woman meets the WWR criteria, they immediately begin contributing towards their rent and any medical bills. If her children are of school age or younger, WWR will usually provide a monthly fixed sum per child.

Usually, these grants are enough to get the woman back on her feet. She knows that WWR will be with her for the long term and can find security knowing she won’t be thrown out of her house for lack of rent money. She will still need to work to find money for food and clothes but this gives her a reason to get up in the morning and improves mental health. Some women are now too old to work and they receive a small subsistence grant from WWR to help pay for food and other essentials. Furthermore, those women who cannot live independently due to old age, ill-health or mental health issues are invited to live at WWR’s women’s home where all meals and accommodation are provided free of charge and the women receive a small stipend to pay for extras.

International China Concern (ICC)

Hope Church is proud to partner with International China Concern. The story of this charity starts in 1993, when David Gotts was volunteering in a Chinese orphanage, a place overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of abandoned children and babies. God spoke to him when he came across an abandoned newborn baby girl, and felt compelled to fight the system to get her into hospital for treatment. He named her Rose. She died the same night, having lived for less than 24 hours. David’s life was never the same.

“These precious children were no longer nameless, faceless babies. To me, each one became as Rose had been: a sacred life to be fought for.”

Fast forward 25 years or so, and Jo Gardner, nowadays a member of Hope Church, got to know Sue Munday, and began to hear more and more about International China Concern. Sue made many trips to ICC’s Changsha children’s centre, where she offered her services as an Occupational Therapist. She also served on the charity’s international board. One thing led to another, and after a period of fundraising for ICC as a gesture of support for Sue, Jo found herself, by the grace and provision of God, travelling to visit the projects in person in Spring 2016! Her biggest takeaway? God’s love leaps over language and bureaucratic barriers to light up the darkest places! ICC has transformed the lives of thousands of vulnerable children.

Within China’s ever-changing social landscape, ICC’s nurturing care is modelling a new standard of support and empowerment for children with disabilities. Our dedicated team of physical and occupational therapists, special educators, social workers, vocational trainers and medical staff work tirelessly to help children live with hope, dignity and opportunity.
